Back in the days when Arizona was the Land Fraud Capitial of
the world I designed all the computer software used by the
House Task Force On Orginized Crime.
These were the days of Ned Warren Sr. who would later die
in prision for his land fraud crimes.
For that matter my brother Tom's best friend Tony Rivera his father was involved in the land fraud in a big time way. He screwed investers out of millions of dollars and did some time in Arizona State Prision. Mr Rivera ran R & T Investments which was their front company. These were the Don Bolles days too. I started the job in the summer that John Harvey Adams allegdly blew up the Arizona Republic Reporter Don Bolles car killing Don Bolles. This unit was funded by the Arizona House of Represenatives, but my part was at Arizona State University where a statistics teacher named Jim Johnson in the Socology Department get a grant from the House to write the computer used by the House Task force On Orginized Crime. Our group was run by a statistics teacher Dr James Johnson. I Mike DiRoss was the one and only computer programmer. I didnt look a dimes worth different then I do now. Long hair in a pony tail down to my butt, Levi's, sun glasses and a baseball cap. And of course some water buffalo sandles. Some people would say I looked more like a dope dealer then an engineer and they were probably right. We had a number of data entry people who would key punch information from public records on to 80 column computer cards or type the information on to OCR forms that would then be scanned into the computer using crude dark age technolgy. What we did was computerize many of the states records systems so people could view them on line. Before our group came around you could go say the Arizona State Real Estate Agency and request all the information on New Warren. They would then give you a box of 25,000 pieces of micro fiche and tell you to feel free to search thru each and everyone of them looking for New Warrens name. Our data entry people went thru many of these state agencys information and key punched or typed the information into the computer. The data base I designed containd all this information, plus information on where to find the records in the manual world. I wrote the software which could be used to search thru this information on the computer. You could then run my softare and request all the information about New Warren and the sofware would tell you exactly which state agencys had information on Ned Warren, a little about the information - such as if it was a real estate license, and where to physically locate the information. The software was kinda like a computerized library catalog of state records. For useless information the software was written on a Univac 1100 computer (a 1110/42 model to be exact) which ran at Arizona State University. Most of the software was written in Fortran IV, Fortran V, Univac 1100 assembly language, and a few bits and pieces of it were in COBOL. Back in those days I dialed into the computer on 300 Baud (WOW) 300 Baud telephone lines (and those 300 Baud modems cost $300) My boss and I discovered some important information about my personal life when the House Task Force on Orginized Crime was given to the Attorney Generals Office then run by Bob Corbin. Jim Johnson my boss made the stupid mistake of telling the Attorneys Generals office that I was a good guy even though I had only been arrested once. He assured them that I was not convicted. His boss told him to fire me. Since I designed the entire computer system I was the brains behind the whole thing and no one else in the world knew how it worked, how to load new data into it, or how it was built because I was the one that desinged and built it. Jim did everything he could to keep the them from firing me. He got them to let me take a lie dector test which asked if i really committed the crimes I was accused of committing 10 years earlier. Of course even though I passed the lie dector tests they said to fire me anyway. Jims next step was to to go the DPS (Department of Public Saftey) agents who arrested me and get their help. This is where the shocker comes in. They told Dr Jim Johnson who was now a respectable dude working for the Attorney Generals office that they framed me because they knew I was dealing drugs. Nice honest ethical guys we got working in our state police department huh! Jim took this information and complained to Steve Twist who was then the number two person in the Attorney Generals office. Steve Twist didnt change his mind and told Jim to fire me still. Jim then went up one last level to Bob Corbin the Arizona Attorney General who keep with the orginal decision that I should be fired because I was arrested for a crime 10 years ago, was not convicted, and despited the fact that two DPS agents said they had framed me! Getting fired from a career stand point was probably the best thing that could happen to me. I would almost double my salery going from about $15,000 to about $30,000. But the real intersting thing was finding out I had been framed by crooked Arizona Department of Public Safty Agents when all along I thought I had been arrested as a mistaken identy. Here is what happened 10 years before I was fired from my job at the Arizona State Attorney Generals Office. I was arrested in my home 6 months after the alleged crime occured. In August I was arrested by some narcs from the DPS who who said I sold them 3 hits of LSD six months prior to that in Feburary on a Saterday night at Papago Park in Phoenix. It was a state wide arrest and over 100 people were arrested that day for drugs sales that occured months earlier. These type of arrests at the time were called "secret inditements" where your arrested months after the alleged crime occured and its a bitch remembering even where your were when the crime was alleged to have occured. These "secret inditements were later ruled unconstitional. Since I had never sold LSD in the state of Arizona I just assumed it was a case of mistaken identy. I thought maybe it was Scott Howel who looked like me but was talled sold the narcs the acid. Or maybe it was that other guy who went to Coronado High who looked like me that sold them the acid. Or maybe it was that guy who went to Camelback High that sold the acid to the narcs. I just assumed it was a case of mistaken identy. I didn't know for 10 years that I was out right framed by some crooked cops. At that time the sentece for sellin LSD was a max of 10 years in jail. So I was not feeling very good about being arrested. The first trial I went to the narcs failed to show up because they were in court in Yuma Arizona. At least the judge said. At the court meeting they agreed to drop the charges if I left the state of Arizona. They also said that they could refile the charges if I ever came back to Arizona. Senor Mike moved to Los Angeles and became a hippy drifter to keep from going to jail in Arizona because some narcs from the DPS framed him. While I pretty much got shafted by the government and some crooked police officers it was a good learning experience living on the streets of Los Angeles and Orange County in Southern California as a homeless person. I got to be in my first good earthquake. It was between a 6 and 7 that caused major damage to Chatsworth up in the San Fernando Vally of Los Angeles. I was 50 miles away in La Habra a city in the north part of Orange county which borders Los Angeles county and it shook the snot out of us. I also enrolled in college for the first time - in Fullerton Jounior College in the City of Fullerton. I also hitch hiked to Oregon from Los Angeles to attend a pop festival. And I hitched hiked from Los Angeles to San Francisco several times to attend Vietnam war protests. A year later I came back to Arizona to attend college at Scottsdale Community College. I was arrested one more time on the LSD sales charges which the crooked pigs refiled. This time the charges were thrown out because the cops claim they lost the evidence. Yea sure as if their had ever been any evidence. I have not been arrested and charged with any crimes since then. Although I have been falsely arrested by crooked cops several times I was never charged with any crimes simply because they were not arrests but shake down's by crooked cops.
